How to Pull Off the Polo

The polo shirt is one of the most worn items in a man’s wardrobe and yet it is one of the most consistently messed up. All too often, sleeves hit too low on the arm, leading to a faulty visual of a clunky unathletic figure on what is really a lean guy. The best polo shirts hit right at the bicep — without squeezing them a la Jersey Shore – and simultaneously fit close through the torso. And while the 70s is rarely revered for its style, look to tennis players of this era for a prime example of what looks right. Those guys look trim and masculine.

No wonder then, that we’ve styled a look with a Boast USA shirt. Boast is a brand back from the dead, originally for squash and tennis players. They offer an array of great polos, but the one we’ve chosen for this look is by far our favorite. This tipped polo is classic with some vintage appeal, and when paired with the best fitting go-to-hell pants on the market–Ovadia and Sons’ salmon canvas trousers–you’ve got a look that is equal appeals to both the modern and timeless sides of style. Don’t forget your feet either, and reach for Oak Street Bootmakers’s trail oxford which is one hell of a spring moccasin.

The other choice we’ve made for the season’s best polo shirt comes from the always reliable Michael Bastian. Designed for his collaborative line with GANT, this faux-patchwork polo is the perfect choice if you want something a little more casual and worn-in. The fit is spot on and it will pair perfectly with a pair of chinos or your favorite washed out jeans. Finally, throw on a pair of Sperry’s chukka boat shoes and you’ve got your second perfect polo look.

  1. Great post! I’m always weary of wearing polos, because I always feel as if they hit my arms in the wrong spot. Maybe I just wasn’t wearing the right fit.
